| Tips and
Techniques Instructions for adhering JewelCraft products
Beads
- Sew beads to your layout
using DMC floss or any of the thin fibers available on the
market today.
- String beads onto a thin
gauge of wire, then poke the end of the wire through to
the back of the page and tape the ends down.
- Cut or punch double-sided
tape into desired shape, then pour beads over the tape and
rub lightly to make them stick.
- Glue beads down one at a
time using a clear-drying adhesive, such as Memory Mount.
- Use a paintbrush to spread
a large amount of clear-drying adhesive then pour beads
over the glue.
Rhinestones
- Mini Glue-Dots are the
perfect size to adhere the 34mm and 40mm round
rhinestones, the triangular rhinestones, and the navette
shape.
- Craft Glue-Dots (in the
red box) give just the needed coverage for the heart and
square shaped rhinestones and the 48mm round ones.
- The 20mm round rhinestone
is so small that even the Mini Glue-Dot would be too large
for it, so use a clear-drying glue to adhere it.
- One final way to hold the
rhinestones in place would be to place them on your layout
and wrap them with wire. To do this, pierce four holes in
the cardstock around the rhinestone (use a tack or
piercing tool). Crisscross wire over it and tape the wire
on the back of the layout.
Mirrors
- Adhere mirrors using Mini
Glue-Dots or a small amount of liquid adhesive.
- Wrap mirrors with wire to
hold them to your layout.
Eyelets
- Use an anywhere hole punch
to make a hole where you’re planning to place the eyelet.
Slide the eyelet in the hole, hold it in place, then flip
the cardstock over. Slide the washer (washers are included
in the eyelet package) over the stem of the eyelet. Next,
place the eyelet setter in the open stem of the eyelet.
Make sure you have a good, heavy hammer and a hard surface
to pound on, and firmly tap the eyelet setter 2-3 times.
The washer will curl over the stem of the eyelet for a
clean, rounded finish.
Sequins
- Use Mini Glue-Dots to
adhere sequins to your layout one at a time.
- If you want to create a
random or “spilled” look with sequins, use a spray
adhesive to spray the area you plan to cover. Then, pour
sequins over the glue and spread them out to the desired
thickness. Place a sheet of vellum or another type of
acid-free clear transparency (you can cut a page
protector) over the area with the sequins and the spray
adhesive.
- String sequins on wire or
floss. Tie a knot before and after each sequin to hold it
in place. Try stringing beads and sequins together for an
interesting look.
- Sew sequins to your layout
using floss. You can also sew through the center hole in
the sequin, string a single bead onto the floss, then
thread the needle back down through the same hole, and the
bead will hold the sequin in place.
Nailheads
- Nailheads have four or
five prongs on the back. Place your layout on a forgiving
surface, such as a mouse pad or a self-healing mat. Set
the nailhead in place on your layout, then gently push the
prongs through the paper. Flip the layout over and use
your fingers or a pair of pliers to bend the prongs. You
can bend them in towards the center, or outwards. The only
time you specifically wouldn’t want to bend them outward
is if you are placing the nailheads in layers of vellum
and you would still be able to see through the vellum to
see the prongs. Once you have bent the nailheads over, you
can hit them once with a hammer to flatten them out.
Caviar Beads (Iron-Ons)
- To iron the caviar beads
onto clothing, follow the detailed instructions included
in the package.
- To adhere the caviar beads
to a layout, you would simply glue them on with a
clear-drying adhesive or attach them with
Glue-Dots—there’s no need to iron them on your page.
Charms
- Place a Glue-Dot or a
Pop-Dot behind the charm to hold it in place.
- String charms on fiber
strands, wire, floss, or thin ribbon.
- Sew charms on your layout
using floss or wire that matches your background page
color.
Fabric Appliqués
- Use double-sided tape
along the length of the appliqué trims.
- Adhere the fabric
appliqués with Hermafix tabs, Glue-Dots, or clear-drying
adhesive.
